Common causes of truck accidents in Florida

On Behalf of Wieland & DeLattre | Nov 11, 2022 | Auto Accident |

Trucks are a vital part of the American economy, but when they are involved in accidents, the results can be catastrophic. It’s important to understand the common causes of truck accidents so that we can do our best to avoid them.

Distracted driving

There are three main types of distractions that can lead to truck accidents: visual, manual and cognitive. Visual distractions take the driver’s eyes off the road, and some of the most common examples include looking at a phone, changing the radio station or looking at something outside of the truck. Manual distractions involve taking one’s hands off the steering wheel, and an example would be reaching for something in the cab. Cognitive distractions are anything that takes the driver’s mind off of driving, and chatting on the phone or daydreaming are both examples.

Fatigue

Fatigued driving is a serious problem among truckers, as they often feel pressure to meet tight deadlines. This can lead to them driving for longer hours than they should, and it can also cause them to take drugs that help them stay awake (such as amphetamines). If you see a truck driver who looks like they might be fatigued, it’s best to give them a wide berth.

Poor vehicle maintenance

If a truck isn’t properly maintained, it can lead to all sorts of problems. For example, worn-out brakes can cause a motor vehicle accident, and faulty lights can make it difficult for other drivers to see the truck. Poor vehicle maintenance is often the result of tight schedules and budget cuts, so it’s important to be aware of this problem.

Inclement weather

Trucks have a hard time stopping in wet weather, and they are also more likely to lose control on slick roads. If you can, it’s best to avoid driving behind a truck in bad weather.

There are many other reasons why truck accidents happen, but these are some of the most common. The best way to avoid a truck accident is to be aware of the risks and to give trucks plenty of space on the road. If you’re a truck driver, make sure to take breaks when you’re tired and to keep your truck properly maintained.
