Can seasonal theme park workers qualify for workers’ comp?

Orlando’s theme parks hire thousands of workers every year for their busy seasons. Suppose you work at one of these parks during summer or holiday peaks. In that case, you must know your workers’ comp coverage rights. It could save you from heavy medical bills if you get hurt on the job.  

What makes someone a seasonal theme park worker?  

When tourist numbers go up, theme parks hire extra staff. These jobs include ride operators, food vendors, performers and store clerks. Florida law says companies with four or more workers must provide workers’ compensation insurance. This rule applies to all workers, year-round or just for a season.  

Your workers’ comp rights as a seasonal employee  

As a seasonal worker, you get the same compensation as full-time staff. Here’s what you should know:  

  • Your coverage starts on day one of your job 
  • You get medical care for work injuries 
  • You can receive pay for missed workdays 
  • You’re covered no matter who caused the accident 
  • Your benefits continue even after your seasonal job ends 

The money you get for missed work depends on what you earn. This amount might differ from what full-time workers receive, but your right to get help stays the same.  

Many seasonal workers worry that filing a claim might cost them future jobs. However, Florida law makes it illegal for employers to punish workers who file honest comp claims. If you get hurt at work:  

  • Tell your supervisor right away 
  • See a doctor your employer picks 
  • Keep records of everything
