Common causes of car accidents in Florida

On Behalf of | Jan 7, 2025 | Auto Accident |

Car accidents remain a serious problem throughout Florida. There are several common causes of car accidents. Being aware of these causes can help you watch for negligent drivers on the roads.

Additionally, understanding steps you can take to avoid car accidents can help keep you safe on the roads.

Distracted driving

Distracted driving continues to be a major cause of car accidents. Distracted driving is any activity that takes your attention off the main task of driving.

Despite popular belief, distracted driving involves more than using a phone while driving. Although using a phone is one type of distracted driving, eating, talking to a passenger, adjusting a navigation system and even looking out a side window are other forms of distracted driving.

Drowsy driving

Drowsy driving is another dangerous cause of car accidents. We are likely all guilty of driving while we are drowsy at times.

Busy schedules, long hours on the road, lack of sleep and stress contribute to drowsy driving. Drivers have a responsibility to stay off the road if they feel they are too tired to drive safely, even if it means cancelling plans or changing their routine.

Speeding

Speeding is a factor in many car accidents. Florida drivers must follow the posted speed limit or drive at a reasonable speed in certain conditions, such as when the weather is bad. Speeding or driving too fast for conditions increases the chance of a serious car accident.

Impaired driving

Driving while impaired due to drugs or alcohol is another main cause of car accidents. Slow reaction times and lack of coordination are some examples of how drugs or alcohol impact the ability to drive.

How to avoid a car accident

You can avoid car accidents by never driving while impaired. If you are drowsy, pull over to a safe place and take a short nap or purchase a caffeinated beverage to keep you awake.

Reduce your speed when driving in poor weather conditions. You generally should not drive the speed limit. Only drive in bad weather when it is necessary.

Always obey traffic laws and drive defensively. This means anticipating dangerous situations and paying attention to potential hazards, including other drivers and road conditions. Check your mirrors consistently and scan the road ahead.

Do not be an aggressive driver

Maintain a safe distance from other divers and do not tailgate. This is a form of aggressive driving.

When you pass drivers, take care and give enough space between you and the other driver. A common rule is to wait three seconds before merging in front of the car you pass.

Do whatever you can to avoid distractions. Focus only on the road when you are driving.

You will likely encounter negligent drivers on the road. Avoid them as much as you can. Sometimes this will mean slowing down and letting them pass, while sometimes you may need to speed up to increase your distance from them.

Remember to not go over the posted speed limit. If you cannot safely get away from another driver, find a safe place to pull over and let them pass. Consider calling the police and reporting them if you feel they are a danger to others on the road.
