Why does post-show traffic cause so many wrecks in Orlando?

On Behalf of Wieland & DeLattre, P.A. | Aug 11, 2026 | Auto Accident |

If you have ever attended an evening show or fireworks display in Orlando, you know what happens the moment you leave. Thousands of cars all hit the road at once as everyone (including you) returns home after a long day. This perfect storm of chaos creates one of the most dangerous driving situations you will face in Florida.

For drivers like you, Orlando’s post-show traffic is not just a nuisance. The hours after a show can be one of the most dangerous times to be on the road. Here is why you may want to avoid it (and what to do if you get caught in an accident).

The mass exodus

After fireworks, park closings and the ends of major events, the volume of vehicles on roads increases dramatically. Unlike morning commutes that stagger traffic over several hours, events end abruptly. Parking lots can empty hundreds of vehicles within minutes. Roads that flowed normally during off-peak hours can become overwhelmed instantly.

This sudden saturation can cause conditions that encourage rear-end collisions. Not only that, Orlando’s tourist areas are full of foreign or out-of-state drivers. Non-locals often rely more heavily on GPS apps and do not know local roads, lane patterns, or exits they need to take. They are more likely to perform dangerous or sometimes illegal maneuvers while driving.

A combination of these conditions can make it dangerous for average drivers like you when traveling during these times.

Florida auto liability

If you instead find yourself in a post-event crash, first, assess the damages and figure out who to contact. To begin with, Florida follows the no-fault standard for car accidents that cause personal injuries. Therefore, to receive compensation, you must first file a claim with your insurer, no matter who is at fault. Specifically, you can get medical bills and lost wages paid through your own Personal Injury Protection (PIP) insurance.

PIP insurance is mandatory in Florida. This mandatory protection can cover 80% of your medical bills and 60% of lost wages up to $10,000. However, the insurance does not pay for vehicle damage. If your vehicle needs repairs, you will need to file a claim through the at-fault driver’s Property Damage Liability (PDL) insurance. State law requires at least $10,000 in PDL from every driver.

Claims after post-event accidents

The actions you take in the minutes and days following the crash are critical. Florida’s insurance laws are unique, and a well-documented claim is your best defense. Call the authorities immediately to establish the foundation of your insurance claim. Do not forget to seek medical attention within 14 days, as missing this deadline forfeits your PIP benefits entirely.

The best way to avoid post-event traffic is to wait it out. However, if you do find yourself in a collision, remember that your documentation can affect the outcome of your claim. For complex car crash claims, consider reaching out to a legal professional who can advise you on your best strategies.
